June 29, 2009

The June meeting of the Jax Woodworker's Club was brought to order at 1:00 PM by the President Marlys Cassedy. The opening prayer was said by Earl Herman. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Marlys Cassedy. There were 31 members and 2 guests. present.

Those members celebrating their birthdays in June were Forbes Grace and Todd Lucy.

Margaret Miller, Treasurer, gave the treasurer's report. The club has a balance of $890.66 in the account.

Jared Carver gave us a safety report. He told us about the importance of keeping our shop clean and our tools in good working condition. Forbes Grace added that it was his first hand experience to check the sharpness of the table saw blade AFTER the blade stops. To do so before it stops results in an unpleasant experience.

Jim Naylor shared a safety trick when using the table saw. He said the blade should be just above the surface of the wood. That way, if you accidently put your hand on the blade,
you're likely to get cut less severely. And by keeping the blade as low as possible, there are more teeth cutting the wood.

Under old business, Marlys shared some ideas that were presented at the Officer's meeting on June 13th to increase club membership. The ideas were discussed by the members. At
the July meeting, these suggestions will be discussed further.

Todd Lucy presented a book review on "Scroll Saw Holiday Patterns." Todd said the book was good for beginners because it demonstrated basic techniques with an emphasis on stack cutting.

The next sawdust trail will be at Dennis Fay's workshop on highway 16. The topic will be "Finishing". Plan to be there for an instructional meeting.

It was mentioned that there is a plan on our website for a dragster. If anyone wants to make the dragster, we have the 2" wheels available.

Brought up for discussion was that we vote on a change to our bylaws. A motion was put to the floor by Earl Herman that instead of the bylaws stating that the club would give
out $5 in four door pirzes at each meeting, the club would instead give out four door prizes. That way, the club is not restricted to any particular thing for the door prizes. The motion was seconded by Jim Naylor. The motion was carried unanimously.

Greg Fisher announced that he has Ash and Maple in lengths under 5' in his truck for anyone that wants it. See him after the meeting.

Kyle Johnson led the Show and Tell portion of our meeting. Those that participated were:

      Bernard Ross

      Ray Reynolds

      Dick Jones

      Laura Ashley

      Earl Herman

Next month's Show and Tell will be whatever you can create out of a 2' x 2' x 1/2" piece of plywood or intarsia.

Laura Ashley announced the winners of the door prizes. Among the door prizes were items that Laura Ashley donated plus four $5 in cash. The winners were:

      Jared Carver

      Bob Carona

     Joan Glaraton

      John Hamilton

      Jim Naylor

      Marc Packard

      Jim Rowand

      George Wittkopp

      Chris Elwood

      Syl Rousquin

The meeting was adjourned at approximately 2:25 PM.
